Lentils have been providing nourishment for centuries. Its origin dates back to 2400 BC where this tiny vegetable was found in Egyptian tombs. Years later, the lentil became one of the first crops to be domesticated in the Near East.
Lentils are a very healthy food, providing excellent 26% protein, giving this crop the highest source of protein other than soybeans. They are very high in folic acid, iron and soluble fiber.
Needless to say, the ancient lentil has a long and storied history. Some historians thought it was used as an aphrodisiac and some believe the possibility that this petite vegetable enlightened the minds of children. Who knows? All we know for sure is, the lentil comes from a brushy annual plant of the legume family and contains lens-shaped seeds. Lentils come in many different varieties. These seeds grow two at a time in pods containing various colors that range from yellow to red, orange to green, as well as brown and black.
They have a short cooking time and a distinctive earthy flavor. Very popular in soup (often combined with some sort of pork) chili, as a side dish with vegetables and seasonings served over rice – and whatever else the chef can imagine! This plant of the pea family has become an essential part in the diet of many across the world.
So, take a trip and feed your taste buds with various lentil dishes, and make sure to drop on by the Marketplace and buy some of these hearty vegetables. Test your skills and create an expert lentil recipe and join in on the world famous Cook-off.
Join the Friday Night Street Fair for that bowl of the free lentil chili and to enjoy all the arts and crafts. There is live music from top blues and rock n roll bands. Saturday events includes 5K Fun Run, other sports events, and a Grand Parade.
