In the Untied States, Spanish Colonial art is most abundant in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado and Spanish Market is easily the most significant gathering of Spanish Colonial artists in the US.
Art forms featured at the market include altar screens, basketry, bone work, carved figures of saints, retablos, colcha embroidery, furniture, hide paintings, ironwork, leatherwork, pottery, precious metals, ramiiletes or paper garlands, straw appliqué, and tin work. More than 200 artists take part in this annual event, displaying and selling their work on the Santa Fe Plaza. This is a juried show, so quality and authenticity are guaranteed.
In addition to the art and craft, every market is filled continuous live music and dance, art demonstrations, and regional foods. A separate youth exhibition area features the work of emerging artists. Sponsored by the Spanish Colonial Arts Society, which also supports the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art in Santa Fe, the summer Spanish Market attracts serious collectors, art lovers, and families out for an enjoyable day. The market is free.
The Spanish Colonial Arts Society also produces annually the Winter Spanish Market on an early Saturday and Sunday in December at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center. Each year prior to the Winter Spanish Market the Society holds ¡Celebración!, the Society’s exciting Art and Travel Auction and Dinner. The Society’s collection of more than 3,500 objects is housed at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, 750 Camino Lejo (Museum Hill) in Santa Fe. The collection includes Spanish colonial art forms spanning four centuries and four continents.
Located on a hilltop overlooking Santa Fe, the Museum stands adjacent to the popular Museum of New Mexico complex (the Museum of International Folk Art, the Laboratory of Anthropology and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture) and is within walking distance of the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian.
