The Great Lakes Folk Festival offers a one-of-a-kind mix of music and dance stages, demonstrations of traditional arts and storytelling, authentic ethnic food, an arts marketplace, craft artists, and many special activities for kids and their companions.

The folk festival celebrates the cultural traditions of communities across America and the world. The Michigan State University Museum works year-round to develop this festival program that reflects the immense variety and vitality of art, skill, knowledge, and wisdom of our cultural heritage for the public. The Great Lakes Folk Festival offers a one-of-a-kind mix of music and dance stages, demonstrations of traditional arts and storytelling, authentic ethnic food, an arts marketplace, craft artists, and many special activities for kids and their companions.

The music and dance program, features performances ranging from blues to bluegrass, Tex-mex, polka, Cajun, Celtic and more diverse cultural expressions and traditions. Musical artists perform two to four times throughout the weekend, so visitors have a chance to see the bands they like and discover new genres. An audience favorite at this event is the Traditions Showcases, which bring together musicians from different groups - fiddlers, banjo players, guitarists, accordionists, percussionists -- who share and compare techniques, traditions and influences for spontaneous and masterful storytelling and performance. Meanwhile, a 2,400-square-foot dance tent lets visitors jig, reel, curtsy, twirl and two-step, complete with dance callers and on-the-spot lessons. Last year, a community sing and musician jam were added to the mix, with a rousing response and plans to expand on it for '11.

Festival-goers appreciate the rich and authentic experience, and often note how the event promotes a greater understanding of diverse cultures, how it brings people together, and how it strengthens community in the way the programs resonate and endure.
