Western Kentucky is proud of their barbeque and the International Bar-B-Q Festival was created to showcase “Good Ole Daviess County Bar-B-Q” and provide local charitable organizations a chance to raise money to support their causes. Now you know the founding of this festival, so here are some facts about the fun you will have.
As far as barbeque, you may not know that there are many secret recipes and techniques to get that special taste. That is where the competition comes in. Local cooking teams produce their best secret recipes in an effort to win the Governor’s Cup, the prize awarded to the best overall barbeque team. And all the great barbeque has to be sampled by someone – and that is YOU. This is the reason you want to purchase a Mutton Glutton pass.
Held at the RiverPark Center, with patio access and river view, the Mutton Glutton pass entitles you to: admission, food, unlimited well drinks (adult and non-alcoholic) and entertainment both days. One night features mutton and pork sandwiches. The other will feature mutton, chicken, and burgoo fresh off the cooking team pits.
One other competition that allows samples is the Backyard Cook-off. Here backyard chefs use their grills to determine who is King or Queen of the Grill. Food categories judged are beef, chicken, pork and turkey with samples to the crowd encouraged.
Now it isn’t just barbeque that makes it a great festival, you also have carnival rides; pie- and mutton-eating contests; music on various stages with local, regional and national talent; a classic car show; crafts and festival pageants.
While in Owensboro, don’t miss the chance to visit the International Bluegrass Music Museum. Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass, was born approximately 45 miles southeast of Owensboro, and Bill and the many bluegrass music artists are honored there.
