In the 1940s when Colonel Sanders created his secret recipe for fried chicken in Corbin little did he know that it would become world famous and that a festival would be created to celebrate fried chicken. Corbin is only about 10 miles south of London and the home of the Colonel Sanders Café and Museum. Sanders’ nephew, Lee Cummings, also began his career in 1952 in Kentucky with Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken.
The World Chicken Festival in London is a four-day event which attracts over 250,000 people each September. Paying tribute to its heritage, it is one of the Kentucky Tourism Industry Association’s “Top Ten” events and Southeast Tourism Society’s “Top 20” events. It was also voted “Best Festival in State” by Kentucky Monthly Magazine.
You don’t want to miss the Saturday parade which begins on Main Street in downtown London. Townspeople participate with floats, vintage cars, mini cars and even tractors. One float includes Colonel Sanders, the “chicken” and the world globe.
Enjoy musical performances daily; midway rides; contests which include: wing eating, clucking, Sanders Look-a-like, egg drop and cooking; and plenty of food. Speaking of food, check out the world’s largest skillet.
