If you love music, music, music, the Great American Brass Band Festival is for you. Bring you blanket or lawn chair and plan to slip back in time when parasols and lemonade were the norm for a warm summer day. Hosted by Danville’s hometown band – the Advocate Brass Band – the event is free and open to the public.
There are plenty of activities over the four-day period so make sure you check the website and plan your day/days to enjoy as many as possible. The balloon race is always spectacular and you can lay back and watch the balloons float by. A major parade marches through the downtown area to Centre College. For those interested in getting a little exercise in, the Run for the Brass, a 5K race, is directed through the beautiful Millennium Park. During the Gallery Hop storefronts and galleries along Main Street will host local artists with exhibits of their latest work. Children can see, touch and play the instruments used by the festival musicians at the Instrument Petting Zoo. And of course, there is music beginning on Friday evening and continuing through the weekend. Sunday morning there is an outdoor ecumenical worship service, accompanied by inspirational brass band music. Did we mention that there is FOOD everywhere?
While visiting Danville for the Brass Band Festival, take time to explore the city. With a historic background, there are many antebellum homes that have been designated historic landmarks. Main Street houses a number of original buildings in a variety of architectural styles. At Constitution Square, 10 conventions were held to separate Kentucky from its mother state, Virginia. Also just a short drive away is Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site and Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill - a restored Shaker community which offers lodging and fine dining.
