“It’s not your grandmother’s quilt” has been the rallying cry since quilting has come back in vogue. Every year quilters from around the world converge on Paducah in April to view the fabric artwork that is entered in the American Quilter’s Society National Quilt Show and Contest.
The American Quilter’s Society National Quilt Show and Contest encompasses the entire community with a merchant mall, workshops and special events. The fabric shops in the city are some of the most popular hangouts during this week. To give you an idea of the scale of this event, in 2011 more than $125,000 in cash prizes will be awarded.
The centerpiece during the event is the National Quilt Museum where the winning quilts from past years are on display. Throughout the year the museum exhibits the finest workmanship and most artistic quilts and special exhibits. Many gentlemen who have to be dragged into the museum are blown away by the artwork and can’t wait to tell others that it is a museum worth visiting.
Some of the events held during the show include: AQS Awards Presentation; AQS roundtable; the National Quilt Museum’s Silent Auction; Auction Preview Party; the Annual Quilt Auction and certified quilt appraisers from the U.S. and Canada.
Special quilt exhibits include Award Winning Quilts from previous shows; AQS It’s in the Bag Contest; Pilgrim/Roy Quilt Challenge; and the AQS/Hobbs Bonded Fibers Fashion Show.
As the National Quilt Museum is located in downtown Paducah, you have access to great restaurants, the LowerTown arts district, a maritime museum, carriage rides and entertainment at the Carson Center.
