During Springtime’s annual festival, downtown Tallahassee transforms into lush market place with the best possible collection of artists and artisans, delicious food, great entertainment, and a children’s park that will delight kids of all ages. Annual attendance to Springtime Tallahassee festival exceeds 200,000.
The Tallahassee community sponsors Springtime Tallahassee. Local “krewe” members and the Board of Directors are entirely volunteer-based and eagerly participate in all Springtime events. These “krewe” members dress in period costume from one of five periods: Spanish, American Territorial, Antebellum, War and Reconstruction, and 20th Century. They also introduce their children to the community’s history through the Springtime Belles and Gents program. This program provides the high-school aged children with a study of Tallahassee and Florida history and opportunities to participate in civic and social services within the community. At each year’s annual festivities, one senior boy and girl who have displayed the greatest commitment to the program are selected and crowned Mr. & Miss Springtime.
In addition to hosting the event, Springtime Tallahassee is also involved with many charities including but not limited to: Lighthouse Children’s Home, the American Cancer Society’s Cattle Baron’s Ball and Relay for Life, the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, the Tree House, Inc., Elder Care, Toys for Tots, Second Harvest Food Bank, Big Bend Hospice, Kids Voting and an annual Teddy Bear Run.
WHAT MAKES THIS EVENT SPECIAL OR UNIQUE?
Springtime Tallahassee is a civic organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Tallahassee history. It was started in 1967 by a group of concerned citizens in response to the Florida Legislature’s proposal to move the capital from Tallahassee.
The founding members of Springtime knew the treasures the community had to offer. By rallying to protect the location of the State Capital not only did they preserve Tallahassee’s history, they also helped ensure a vital local economy. This founding principle holds true for the current Springtime festival, with visitors from outside Leon County spending an estimated five million dollars during the Springtime event. Due to these roots, the event is a physical representation of southeastern history and culture.
